What a good statement has

Every university words it differently, but they mostly ask for the same five things:

  1. The tool's name, and the version if you know it.
  2. Who makes it and where to find it (a link).
  3. What you used it for, in plain words.
  4. The prompts you typed, or a few examples.
  5. What you did with the output: rewrote it, checked it, or left it out.

Keep it short and specific. “I used ChatGPT to check grammar in my final draft” is better than a paragraph about AI in general.

Questions

Do I need an AI acknowledgement if I only used Grammarly?
It depends on your university. Sydney says basic spelling and grammar checkers don't need one. Other universities don't make that exception, so check your university's page. If you're still not sure, add a one-line statement. It costs you nothing.
Where do I put the statement?
Most Australian universities want it at the end of your assignment, just before or after the reference list. Some use a cover sheet or a form in the learning system instead. Your university's page here says which.
Is the acknowledgement the same as referencing?
No. The acknowledgement says how you used AI. A reference is only needed when you quote or use AI output in your work. Many universities ask for both, so the tool gives you both.
What if I didn't use AI at all?
Some universities still want you to say so. Tick “I didn't use any AI” in step 1 and you'll get your university's wording if it has one.
Does this tool send my prompts anywhere?
No. Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to us or to any AI.
