CDU requires students to check with their lecturer before using AI and to cite and reference any AI output wherever it appears; research (HDR) candidates must also include a statement in their thesis describing how AI tools were used.

The rules at a glance

When you need one
Coursework: whenever AI output is used in an assignment (where permitted by the lecturer/unit). HDR: whenever GenAI is used in thesis research or writing.
Where it goes
Coursework: in-text citation where the output appears plus a reference list entry. HDR theses: a statement in the methodology or acknowledgements section.
Referencing
Cite and reference all AI output. APA example: OpenAI. (2023). ChatGPT (version GPT-3.5). [Large language model]. https://openai.com/blog/chatgpt/ Harvard example: OpenAI 2023, ChatGPT (version GPT-3.5), large language model, https://openai.com/blog/chatgpt/ Check your unit for the required format.
Must include
  • how the AI tools were used (HDR statement)
Also note
  • Check with your lecturer before using any AI; acceptable use varies by unit, course or faculty
  • Not referencing AI use and output may be plagiarism
  • AI must support, not replace, the candidate's own intellectual contribution
  • Supervisors and examiners may not use GenAI to critique, give feedback on or assess student work
  • Examiners should not rely on AI detectors; iThenticate checks are required at HDR milestones
  • Microsoft Copilot is the preferred tool; do not share personal, university or research data with other tools
