Victoria University AI acknowledgement

VU students may only use generative AI when their teacher explicitly allows it, and any use must be disclosed; using AI without acknowledging it counts as plagiarism under the Academic Integrity Policy. AI-generated text should be marked (quotes or highlighting) and referenced in your unit's referencing style, and teachers may also ask for a written acknowledgement of how AI contributed.

The rules at a glance

When you need one
Whenever you use any generative AI tool (including translation tools) in assessed work; acknowledgement is described as good practice, with exact requirements set by assessment instructions. HDR candidates must acknowledge AI use in their thesis, including AI editing.
Where it goes
Not fixed: as requested by the teacher/assessment instructions (an acknowledgement of how AI contributed and/or entries in the reference list). For HDR theses, in the Student Declaration of Authenticity.
Referencing
Reference AI output using the conventions of your unit's referencing style (VU library has GenAI pages for each of the four styles used at VU, including APA and IEEE). APA 7 example from the VU guide: in-text (OpenAI, 2023) or OpenAI (2023); reference list 'OpenAI. (2023). ChatGPT (Mar 14 version) [Large language model]. https://chat.openai.com/chat'.
Must include
  • identify the tool and include a reference per the VU referencing style guide
  • mark reproduced AI text with quotation marks
  • highlight sections of AI text you have not edited
  • explain how GenAI was used (acknowledgement)
Also note
  • only use GenAI if explicitly directed or allowed by your VU teacher; use without permission may be an academic integrity breach
  • using AI to generate work without acknowledging it is plagiarism (Academic Integrity Policy Part C) and may be treated as contract cheating
  • rules can differ between units and between tasks
  • you are responsible for the accuracy of submitted content, including AI-fabricated references, quotes or offensive output
