University of Western Australia AI acknowledgement

UWA expects an AI Acknowledgement Statement whenever an AI tool helped develop or research an assessment, plus a citation in the reference list for any AI output used directly. Unit Coordinators decide whether AI is permitted, often using UWA's three tiers of AI use.

The rules at a glance

When you need one
Acknowledgement whenever an AI tool is used in developing or researching an assessment; citation whenever AI output (text or image) is used directly in the work.
Framework
UWA's 3 Tiers of AI Use in Assignments
Where it goes
Usually at the beginning of the assessment, typically on the title page, unless the Unit Coordinator specifies otherwise.
Prompts and outputs
Keep a record of prompts, chats and outputs, as the Unit Coordinator may request them.
Referencing
Yes: any AI-generated text or image used must be cited and included in the reference list, following UWA's guides for AGLC, APA 7, Chicago (author-date and footnotes), IEEE, MLA and Vancouver. No example format given in these sources.
Must include
  • name of the AI tool or technology
  • date or date range of use
  • description of the assistance (e.g. editing, proofreading, translation, automated writing)
  • where AI-generated content was applied in the assignment
Also note
  • Use AI only if the Unit Coordinator permits it for that assessment
  • AI must not replace your own critical or creative thinking or prevent skill development
  • In Tier 3 tasks you are graded on your response to the output, not the output itself
  • AI used purely for personal study (not used in the assignment) needs no permission
