University of Technology Sydney AI acknowledgement

UTS separates acknowledging AI (when it helped you do the work, e.g. editing) from referencing it (when you quote or paraphrase it as a source). The library offers a one-line acknowledgement template and recommends an appendix showing prompts and outputs; subject staff set the final rules.

The rules at a glance

When you need one
Acknowledge when GenAI tools helped complete the assignment (e.g. editing); reference when AI output is used as a source (quoted or paraphrased). Check with your tutor that AI use is acceptable first.
Where it goes
Acknowledgement in the assignment, with a recommended appendix showing evidence of use (prompts and outputs).
Prompts and outputs
Recommended: include an appendix with prompts and the tool's output as evidence of use.
Referencing
Yes when used as a source. APA 7 (section 6.08): Company. (Year). Name/Title (Version) [Type]. URL, e.g. Microsoft (2025). Copilot (February 10 version) [Large language model]. https://copilot.microsoft.com. AGLC4: written correspondence rule 7.12, e.g. footnote 'Output from ChatGPT, OpenAI to John Smith, 23 February 2023', listed under Other in the bibliography. AI images get a figure label, title, in-text citation and reference entry.
Must include
  • name of the AI tool
  • specific use
  • how the output was modified
  • how you checked the accuracy of information, data or sources
Also note
  • Do not assume AI use is permitted unless teaching staff specify it
  • Unacknowledged AI-produced content is academic misconduct
  • Generate verbatim material for assessment only when instructed that it is appropriate
  • Assignments may be analysed for AI-generated text
  • Tutor or subject coordinator advice overrides the library template
