Torrens University Australia AI acknowledgement

Torrens requires an AI use declaration on every assessment, including saying when no AI was used. Supporting uses (brainstorming, editing) go in a Statement of Acknowledgement; AI content that appears in the work also needs an APA reference.

Torrens University Australia's own wording

"I used ChatGPT to brainstorm research questions and organise the structure of Section 2. I checked the suggested sources using the Library databases and wrote the final content myself."

The rules at a glance

When you need one
For every assessment. Declare any AI that helped brainstorm, find or summarise information, draft or rewrite, check grammar or wording, generate/edit images, or generate/debug code. Standard spell check is exempt.
Where it goes
AI Use: Statement of Acknowledgement Form on the MyLearn submission page (saved as a submission comment); via the mobile app, attach the Word template from the assessment instructions
Referencing
APA 7 (Torrens adapted) when you quote, paraphrase or include AI-generated text, images, code or media: 'Developer. (Year). Name of AI tool (Version) [Large language model]. Publisher. URL', e.g. OpenAI. (2025). ChatGPT (Feb 2025 version) [Large language model]. OpenAI. https://chat.openai.com. In-text: (OpenAI, 2025). Process-only uses need no formal reference.
Must include
  • which tool(s) you used
  • what you used them for
  • which section or part of the assessment was affected
  • what you did with the output
Also note
  • Declaring AI use does not make it permitted; follow assessment and subject requirements
  • Avoid vague statements like 'I used AI to help with my assessment'
  • AI writing assistants that reword or generate text must be declared
  • Ask your Learning Facilitator if unsure whether a use is allowed

If you didn't use AI

Yes. The form requires selecting 'I did not use AI' if no AI was used at any stage.
