Murdoch University AI acknowledgement
Murdoch leaves the rules on AI use to each Unit Outline, and the Library's referencing guides explain how to disclose and cite it. In the APA guide, any AI use (including for editing or grammar) must be disclosed in the introduction or method section, with the prompt and relevant output given in the text and credited both in-text and in the reference list.

The rules at a glance
- When you need one
- APA guide: whenever an AI tool is used in any way to help with research or an assignment, including editing or grammar enhancement. What use is allowed is set by each Unit Outline.
- Where it goes
- APA guide: describe how AI was used in the introduction or method section; the full AI conversation is recommended as an appendix or supplementary material, referred to at least once in the text.
- Prompts and outputs
- Provide the prompt and relevant generated text in your writing; it is recommended to include the full AI conversation as an appendix or supplementary material so it is retrievable.
- Referencing
- Style-specific Library referencing guides (APA, MLA, IEEE, Vancouver, Chicago, ACS, AGLC). APA format: 'Author, A.A. or Creator B.B. (YYYY of latest update). Name of AI program [Type of AI model]. URL', e.g. 'Microsoft. (2026). Microsoft Copilot for Microsoft 365 [Large language model]. https://copilot.microsoft.com'. In-text: (Author or Creator, YYYY) or Author or Creator (YYYY), e.g. (Microsoft, 2025; see Appendix A for the full transcript).
- Must include
- how the AI tool was used
- the prompt used
- relevant text generated in response
- in-text citation and reference list entry for the AI tool
- Also note
- all AI use must be within University requirements; students must confirm the allowed level of AI use (Unit Outlines give unit-specific guidance)
- unauthorised AI use may be regarded as academic misconduct and referred for an academic integrity investigation
- AI-generated references may be false; always check original sources
- uploading copyrighted materials or Murdoch intellectual property to third-party AI tools is not allowed except where database conditions permit the institutional Copilot
