Conference on Neural Information Processing Systems (NeurIPS) AI disclosure statement
In the NeurIPS main track, authors may use any tool to write the paper but are fully responsible for its correctness; LLM or agent use only has to be described in the experimental setup when it is an important, original or non-standard part of the method. The 2026 Position Paper Track is stricter: papers must be substantially human-written, and authors must state how AI was used and attest to compliance at submission.

Conference on Neural Information Processing Systems (NeurIPS) doesn't publish a fixed template, so this uses a general format that covers what it asks for.
The rules at a glance
- When you need one
- Main track: when agents/LLMs are an important, original or non-standard component of the method (spell/grammar checking, editing aid and basic code assistance need no documentation). Position Paper Track: every submission must state how AI tools were used in preparing the paper, if at all.
- Where it goes
- Main track: the experimental setup section (or equivalent) of the paper. Position Paper Track: a statement and attestation at submission time.
- Prompts and outputs
- Position Paper Track: authors whose submissions show significant AI involvement must provide an audit trail showing compliance (or provide evidence of substantial human engagement when asked).
- Must include
- main track: description of how agents/LLMs were used in implementing the method
- position track: how AI tools were used in preparing the paper (if at all)
- position track: attestation that AI was not used beyond permitted copy-editing
- Also note
- agents and LLMs cannot be authors
- authors are responsible for all text, figures and references; hallucinated citations violate the NeurIPS Code of Conduct
- prompt injections or other attempts to manipulate reviewing are strictly prohibited
- reviewers/ACs must not share submission content or code with unsanctioned LLMs
- Position Paper Track: AI only for copy-editing or similar peripheral changes; reviewers must not use AI to write reviews; violators may be desk rejected
- Position Paper Track 2026 used the Pangram AI detector and desk rejected 178 submissions
If you didn't use AI
Position Paper Track only: authors must state how AI was used 'if at all', implying a statement even when no AI was used.
