University of Leeds AI acknowledgement

From 2026/27, Leeds lets students use technologies including GenAI in taught coursework unless the assessment brief restricts it. Students must acknowledge that use by stating which tool they used and how, and must reference any AI output they include. Getting the acknowledgement wrong counts as academic misconduct.

The rules at a glance

When you need one
Whenever generative AI has been used to help create assessed work (taught programmes, including taught parts of PGR programmes).
Prompts and outputs
Not required as such; include a shareable link to the conversation or output where the tool provides one.
Referencing
Cite and reference any AI output included in your work, in the style the assessment brief specifies; direct copy-paste must be in quotation marks. Leeds Harvard format: Company. Year. Name of Generative AI (Version number if known). [Generative AI]. [Date accessed]. Available from: URL of specific output if available. Example: "Microsoft. 2024. Copilot. [Generative AI]. [Accessed 12 March 2024]."
Must include
  • which AI tool was used
  • how it was used (e.g. idea generation, summarising notes, generating an image)
Also note
  • follow any restrictions in the assessment brief; using GenAI where not permitted is academic misconduct
  • technologies may support but not replace your own learning, understanding and skills
  • students may be asked to demonstrate authorship of their work
  • GenAI may be used for proofreading support
  • do not upload work to AI or plagiarism detector websites
  • do not include AI-supplied references you have not seen and checked yourself
